You have trusted in Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord. Your new spiritual life has begun. In fact, as the Bible puts it, "all things have become new." (II Corinthians 5:17) I know that it is exciting to realize that God has done a great work in your life and that you are destined to spend eternity with Him in Heaven.
New life is exciting and wonderful; however, it requires nourishment if it is to develop and prosper. Imagine leaving a newborn child to grow on his own. Of course, that would be ridiculous. A baby cannot survive without the necessities of physical Life such as food, clothing, and shelter. The new spiritual life is very much the same. Left alone, it will stagnate. Real growth can come only as the nutrients of the spiritual life are provided. It is my purpose to share with you what some of those nutrients are and how you can use them to nourish that wonderful new life which God in His love has given to you.
BIBLE READING
First of all, we want to consider Bible reading. Without question, the Bible is the single most important resource which God has given us for our blessing and spiritual growth. It is the Word of God and the direction book for how we are to live our human lives. As God Himself expresses it, "All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work." (II Timothy 3:16-17) Because of the importance of the Scriptures, God has commanded us to carefully study them. He said, "Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, handling accurately the word of truth." (II Timothy 2:15)
I could not stress too much how very important this is. Just as food is necessary for the growth and development of the human body; the Bible, the bread of life, is important for the soul. You cannot succeed in the Christian life without studying the Scriptures. You need to develop a plan for daily Bible study which will enable you to learn the Word of God. Develop a plan to read the Bible in one year. Read with a desire, not only to understand it, but to obey it, and you will be blessed.
BIBLE READING
CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP
We have considered two important factors in the spiritual growth of the Child of God--Bible reading and prayer. Another important factor in Spiritual growth is fellowship with other Christians. We live in a world in which there is much opposition to the Gospel and to those who love it. We need the support and friendship of others who love the Lord and have a desire to serve Him. We can learn from one another and support one another in our walk with the Lord.
God set up the church as a primary organization for the fellowship and development of Christians. If we desire to grow in the Lord, we should be involved in the programs of the church as much as possible. In fact, God has told us that we are not to be "forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another... (Hebrews 10:25)
CONCLUSION
Minsky Ministries
Dr. Barry J. Minsky
I was sitting in the chapel a few weeks ago. I guess that is a good place for a chaplain on Sunday. I became concerned about how few people were there. I wasn't preaching that Sunday, so I could be part of the congregation. Somehow, there seems to be much less interest in the things of God than there was several years ago, I thought. Then my mind started wandering. I suppose I am not the only one whose mind wanders in church. I was thinking about the forces that lead to the destruction of nations. Now, that's heavy, isn't it? The great nations of the world were ripe for a fall when their moral and religious fiber deteriorated. Just think of the ancient Roman Empire. Outside forces could not hurt the empire until the moral structure had all buy disintegrated. Personal integrity and morality disappeared. The will to excel as a nation was gone and the empire was destroyed.
Well, I was sitting in church when I thought about all of this. My mind started focusing on religion. I think it was about the time we were singing the Gloria Patre. There was a time in the history of ancient Israel when the nation was about to be destroyed by foreign powers. The prophets were warning the people that unless they made significant changes in the way they lived, they would be conquered. What was so wrong with them? The biggest issue was idolatry. Instead of worshiping the God who had made them, they were bowing down and praying to idols made of wood and stone. The prophet, Jeremiah, put it this way,
How utterly stupid, I thought! Chop down a tree; carve it; and then bow down to it and worship it as your god. It was time for the sermon. It was a good one too, as much as I can remember of it. I thought, "isn't it great that we are such a sophisticated people. We wouldn't be so ridiculous as to worship idols; not us." But the more I thought, the more I realized that we are not that much different from the idolaters of old. What are idols, anyway? They are those things that we put in the place of God. I guess the cars we love could be idols. Our stereos and computers, our bikes and our houses, even our careers--if we put them ahead of God --could be our idols. If great nations in the past could loose their moral and religious fiber and disappear from history, because something took the place of God, could that happen to us? Yes, it could! Wow, such a deep subject. But what could I do to make a difference. I am only one person. Have you ever heard that before? Nations, I realized, are made up of individuals. Only godly individuals can make a nation great. I thought of what it would be like if I could return to Vicenza some day and see mobs of people crowding into the chapel because they wanted nothing more than to worship God. What would that mean to us as individuals, to the Army, and to our nation?
It was time for the closing hymn. So I stood and sang with the rest of the congregation,
O gratefully sing His power and His love;
Our shield and defender, the Ancient of Days,
Pavilioned in splendor, and girded with praise."
Chaplain (LTC-R) Barry J. Minsky
"For the customs of the peoples are delusion; Because it is wood cut from the forest, The work of the hands of a craftsman with a cutting tool. They decorate it with silver and with gold; They fasten it with nails and with hammers so that it will not totter. Like a scarecrow in a cucumber field are they, and they cannot speak; They must be carried, Because they cannot walk! Do not fear them, For they can do no harm, Nor can they do any good. But they are altogether stupid and foolish in their discipline of delusion--their idol is wood!" Jeremiah 10:3-5, 8

His parents were not particularly enthusiastic about the new religion of their only son. To dissuade Barry from his beliefs, they took away Barry's college tuition, his car, private phone, and monetary support. This wasn't successful, so Barry's parents sent Barry to the rabbi. Barry witnessed to the rabbi and asked him, ˜Rabbi, "Who has ascended into heaven and descended? Who has gathered the wind in His fists? Who has wrapped the waters in His garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name or His son's name? Surely you know![1] The rabbi replied, I don't know.
Barry bought a bicycle and rode from the suburbs of Philadelphia into the city to attend Bible College. Barry's parents told him that they would return his college tuition, car, phone, etc and he could be a Christian, but he was not allowed to tell anyone about it. Barry chose to follow God's call. ¨Barry met a Christian young lady at a street meeting. They fell in love as teenagers and determined that God has called them to go into the ministry and serve the Lord together. They married and rented a duplex owned by Nancy's mother. Barry went to seminary where he carried a heavy schedule and worked full time as a janitor for the headquarters of Sun Oil Company. He taught a Bible study and spoke at churches. Barry graduated from seminary and he received the seminary's award for the top grade in theology one year and for history another year. God gave Barry a bright mind, and Barry has been faithful to develop that gift, in order to be a faithful servant of the Lord. Barry has 2 masters and two doctorate degrees.
Barry and Nancy moved to Washington, D.C. To direct their first ministry to the Jewish people. Their ministry was exciting as they witnessed to many Jewish people whom God had brought across their paths and to their Bible studies and meetings. Barry and Nancy and their 3 children were driving on the Washington Beltway at night when they were in a near-fatal auto accident. A drunk had left his car on the highway, on a curve, with no flares or lights and the Minsky's car hit the drunk's abandoned car and slid across the highway. Nine-month-old Joel hit his head on the dashboard and his head split open like a nut, with bone in his brain and a fractured skull. Nancy went through the windshield, had glass in her eyes, lost the bone under her eye, and had multiple fractures over the left side of her face. The doctors said Joel and Nancy would die, and if they did live, Joel would be brain-damaged and Nancy would be blind. The Alexandria Hospital staff said they had never before had such a large response for blood donations for a family. People prayed, donated blood and God performed a miracle. Nancy's Jewish doctor said, Only God could have accomplished what happened in your lives. ¨Barry and Nancy and their three children moved back to New Jersey near family and friends. Barry continued to work with Friends Of Israel while Joel and Nancy recuperated and had surgeries. Nancy was hospitalized 10 times within two years. Joel had a plastic plate put into his forehead to protect his brain.
Barry was called into the pastorate and also to simultaneously serve as an Army Chaplain in the NJ National Guard. The Minskys were later called to a larger church in the suburbs on Philadelphia. Then the Lord opened the door and Barry was offered a slot as an active duty chaplain in the U. S. Army. The Minskys served and ministered together in the Army Chaplaincy for 20 years at seven U.S. military posts, and in Frankfurt Germany; Vicenza, Italy; and Landstuhl Medical Center in Germany. Barry also had unaccompanied deployments to the DMZ Korea, two tours to Saudi Arabia, and one tour to Uganda. God has given Barry the gift to be a brilliant Bible expository preacher. Barry is a blessing wherever he goes. Joel and Nancy both endured many operations over the years. When Joel was five years old, a pediatric plastic surgeon took out Joel‚s rib, made rib grafts, and put Joel's own ribs into his head to replace the plastic plate which had been installed. By God's grace, Joel is neurologically sound. Nancy had double vision for 27 years and wore thick prism glasses, until an Army eye muscle surgeon rebuilt 90% of her left eye muscle.
In the fall of 2001 while serving as post chaplain at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, GA, doctors diagnosed Barry as having a rare cancer; the physicians gave no hope. They operated and removed three of Barry's organs: a kidney, an adrenal gland, and the gall bladder. Our son Paul left PMI, the staffing business he owned in southern NJ, to support his father and mother at Eisenhower Army Medical Center. People prayed; many visited and again by God's grace, the Lord performed a miracle. Barry could have chosen to serve another Army tour of duty, but he decided to retire from the Army in 2002, after having faithfully served 27 years. ¨Barry has been ministering God's Word in Savannah--preaching in churches and ministering as a chaplain for Hospice Savannah.
In May, 2006, Barry had a surgical biopsy of his kidney, which was read at The Mayo Clinic. The kidney specialist diagnosed Barry as having a disease which can destroy his one good kidney by depositing scar tissue in the kidney and allowing too much protein to go through his kidney. This disease cannot spread to other organs. The specialist has just put Barry on a new medicine, which is effective in 50% of the cases. Please pray for God's faithful servant Dr Barry Joel Minsky, that God will work in his life and body and effect healing. In my opinion, having lived and served with Barry, I know him to be a fine ethical man, a faithful servant of the Lord Jesus. PLEASE PRAY for God's servant Barry Minsky, the Minsky Family, and Minsky Ministries.
